sensory nerve cells, called nociceptors.
The gateway opens in response to capsaicin to allow positively charged molecules such as calcium to rush into the nerve cell. In other laboratory tests, Dr. Caterina, MD, PHD, University of California, San Francisco, found that protons-positively charged hydrogen atoms that are released by cells in response to tissue injury as part of an inflammatory response, amplified the effect of capsaicin on the receptors.
